Having worked in many diverse and challenging settings, I often find that people, especially nurses, are in competition with each other.
Let me set the record straight, I am a very competitive person, but I am not in the business or mindset of ruining the success of someone else.
Jealousy is a normal feeling. However, if we work together we can actually learn from each other.
For example, if there is someone working on a specific topic that you are passionate about, why not ask to share resources? Why not ask to work together? Why not reach out and ask for support?
Is it our ego that gets in the way or the fact that we have to admit that we don’t know everything?
In the healthcare field, there is incredible progress being made that we can all learn from. Why are so stuck on our own feelings rather than recognizing that if we share the information, the patients who we care for will be better off?
My call to action is for you to reach out to a fellow coworker, a nurse, someone you admire, and ask them to share their information. Consider working together so we can stop working in silos and improve the care of patients.
