We often hear people say to not share details of their upcoming vacations on social media because that is potentially a clue for people who want to do bad things, that the house is empty.

The point of this post is not to tell people what to do as far as their social media presence, but rather to think of our most vulnerable populations and what happens during a disaster.

When an evacuation order has been made not everyone has the means to go to somewhere safer. It is not uncommon to have elderly patients stay in their home.

There is a fear that, if they evacuate and go to a shelter, they will not be able to return back to their home. A home that has been the place of irreplaceable memories.

The purpose of this post is to raise awareness on the need to think of our neighbors and their ability to access care when a disaster strikes.

My call to action is to get to know that neighbor who lives alone with their pet and ask if they have plans to evacuate or what they may need from the grocery store in case they don’t have their meal delivery during the storm and also to make sure they have enough pet food so that they don’t try to leave and get injured.

What I am sharing is not profound or new, but rather a reminder for us all to support those that are less able bodied than us, not just during a disaster, but everyday.

We are all getting older. Take the time to get to know your name. Their name. Where their family lives, so that if something did happen to them, you’d be there to support them.

If we implement these minor changes in our life now, then we are being proactive for how to support vulnerable communities in preparing for a disaster.
