Emergency nursing has taken me into hospital emergency departments, ambulances, helicopters, disaster zones, and communities around the world. Different environments, different resources, and different challenges. But one thing has remained consistent: the extraordinary responsibility placed on emergency nurses.

We meet people on some of the worst days of their lives. Sometimes we save them. Sometimes we can’t. And sometimes the most important thing we do is simply make sure they are not alone.

I’ve spent much of my career witnessing what emergency nurses are capable of, particularly when resources are limited, systems are overwhelmed, and the situation is anything but predictable, but I’ve also seen what this profession takes from people.

The missed holidays. The physical exhaustion. The violence. The difficult decisions. The patients whose faces we still remember years later. And the expectation that we will somehow put it all aside and be ready for the next person who needs us.

Emergency nurses are often praised for their resilience, but resilience should never become an excuse to ignore the conditions under which nurses are expected to work.

Today, I want to recognize the emergency nurses working in crowded hospitals, rural communities, conflict zones, ambulances, and places where help may be hours away.

I also want to recognize those who have stepped away from the bedside but continue to serve through education, research, leadership, policy, and humanitarian work. Your contributions still matter.

To my colleagues around the world, thank you for what you do, for what you teach others, and for the humanity you bring into situations where it can so easily be lost.

Happy Emergency Nurses Day. May we continue to serve, but may we also demand a profession that takes care of its own.
