In every evacuation shelter I’ve worked in, there’s always someone crying not for their home, but for their pet they had to leave behind. Animals are part of our families, yet they’re often left out of emergency planning.
During hurricanes and wildfires, I’ve seen responders adapt, setting up pet shelters, coordinating with veterinarians, even comforting frightened animals. It’s a beautiful reminder that compassion extends beyond species, but we can’t rely on improvisation.
Preparedness must include our pets, food, crates, vaccination records, and identification tags. Because in the chaos of disaster, no one should have to choose between their safety and their companion’s life.
Call to Action: Review your emergency plan today. Include your pets, food, medication, and an evacuation plan. Share this reminder with fellow pet owners.
