Weather the Storm is an immersive virtual reality experience designed to help coastal residents understand the true dangers of hurricanes—without putting their lives at risk. Developed by a multidisciplinary team of researchers, this simulation places you inside a coastal home as a major storm approaches, letting you experience the escalating wind, rain, and storm surge firsthand. 

In collaboration with the National Hurricane Center, Clemson University, Georgia Sea Grant, and South Carolina Sea Grant, the University of Georgia/CHARTER has just completed a NOAA-funded project using virtual reality (VR) to educate the public about the dangers of hurricanes and storm surges.  Supplementary education materials (PPT slides, videos, and handouts) are also available to complement the VR experience. 

Anyone with access to a virtual reality headset can easily download and use the VR experience from the website, where you will find video and PDF manuals that will guide you on exactly how to use the VR headset experience. The materials are posted on the Center for Advanced Computer and Human Ecosystems at the University of Georgia website at https://www.ugavr.com/weatherthestorm

• As new technology becomes available it provides an opportunity for children and adults to participate in simulated disaster incidents that can increase awareness and improve skills.
