Reflections on Resilience

Nurse Jamla

Flowchart illustrating the relationship between hazard exposure, social vulnerabilities, and disaster impacts, highlighting social risk processes and outcomes.

Thirty days of writing about disasters sounds heavy, and it is, but it’s also hopeful. Because within every tragedy I’ve witnessed lies a thread of humanity that refuses to break.

Resilience isn’t the absence of loss; it’s the courage to rebuild while still grieving. It’s the teacher returning to a damaged school, the nurse setting up a clinic in a tent, the child laughing amid rubble.

Disaster work reminds me daily that recovery is possible, not because systems are perfect, but because people are extraordinary.

Call to Action: Take a quiet moment tonight to reflect on your own resilience. What have you survived? What have you rebuilt? And what can you help strengthen for someone else tomorrow?
