I fly a lot. In the past year, I have been on board so many flights that ended up getting diverted due to issues. I’d be lying if this didn’t make me afraid to fly.

However, blaming issues on lack of staffing is unacceptable. In the nursing world, I have worked understaffed, getting yelled at by physicians when I was called to one trauma bay only to get yelled at because there was no one to attend to the other trauma patients. In a big city, that is not ok.

How many more times are we going to use “short staffed” as an excuse? How many times are we going to allow being “short staffed” to affect the work that we do an its impact on the patients we care for in the communities in which we serve?

My call to action is for us all to take a stand on ensuring we are adequately prepared for the disasters that lie ahead.
