This Veterans Day weekend I want to share with you the stories of Medal of Honor recipients that I had that honor of being in the company of. Their families and significant others attended as well, and it reinforced how important they are in our lives, especially when one is called to serve.

SSG Luke Murphy (far left, red tie) was injured in Iraq in 2006. He, like many other soldiers with amputated limbs, highlights the extreme pain and adjustments he had to make to overcome the daily challenges of being in a wheelchair and walking with his prosthetic. His story of resilience and how he learned to adapt and not let his injury get in the way of him living his life, is inspiring.
Danielle and Taylor Morris (second and third on the left), have a love story that defies all challenges. In 2012, Taylor was injured in Afghanistan and became a quadruple amputee. Danielle, his girlfriend at the time, supported him and was by his side through the entire rehabilitation process. Let us not forget how important significant others and families are in our lives. They truly show us what “Love Ain’t.”

Staff Sergeant Melvin Morris received the Medal of Honor by President Obama in March of 2018, for his heroic acts of Valor during the Vietnam War. He was also one of the first African American Green Berets.

Captain Gary “Michael” Rose is one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever met. I learned so much about history in such a short time, that it made me reflect on what I actually learned in school!

Commander George Coker was a POW for over 2000 days in Hanoi during the Vietnam War. He adapted and found ways to communicate with his fellow POWs.
History will continue to repeat itself unless we learn from our past. May we always look forward and remain steadfast in our hope for peace.
