There’s an old saying often heard in military and emergency response circles: “If it ain’t raining, you ain’t trainin.” Today, that phrase felt especially relevant as we braved extreme conditions to conduct a multidisciplinary exercise focused on the safe transport of highly infectious patients.
The heat was relentless-thick, searing, and unyielding. Staying hydrated wasn’t just a recommendation, it was a survival imperative. Every participant, whether in PPE or logistical support gear, felt the toll of the weather, and yet, we pressed on, because in real-world disaster response, conditions are rarely ideal.
The exercise demanded precision, collaboration, and stamina. From the meticulous donning and doffing procedures to the coordination between EMS, hospital teams, and public health officials, today was a reminder that our greatest strength lies in how we work together, even when the weather tests every ounce of our focus.
Just as the last scenario wrapped up, the skies opened. Rain poured down as if to close the day with a final nod to tradition. Exhausted but proud, we ended the exercise soaked, but stronger, more prepared, and more unified.
Training in extreme conditions is never comfortable, but it’s necessary. Because when the real call comes, it won’t wait for cool weather or clear skies, and neither will we.
