Today I learned the challenge of accessible blood and blood products in extreme weather conditions. Lately, there has been a lot of talk about pre-hospital blood use and how it is saving lives, but I want to focus that conversation on providing blood in weather conditions as cold as -22F. Stay tuned for more information on this from my colleagues.

During one of the presentations, the speaker mentioned how important it was for his family to know that he was ok during a deployment, because there is so much mis/dis-information in the media. You never realize that the person on the other side of the world waiting for you is thinking when they see the news. It’s not like you can just pick up the phone and call or text.
We talk about our support system, but let’s not forget the worry and anxiety that they feel when we are out doing our work and are disconnected from them.
Therapy dogs visited us throughout the day and it is amazing how their presence alone brings so much joy. I met with Smartie Pants from Crisis Canines and the look on my face says it all.
Last, but not least, the night ended with some intense concentration during a game of Jenga. Not that I was competitive or anything : )
