Incredible first day in Anchorage, AK hearing from the Governor about her role in disaster preparedness and how we need to all work together and not in silos, to better our communities. With stunning mountain views, I am not going to lie, it was definitely hard to focus!

One thing I did learn was the challenges in accessing patients during an emergency/disaster in Alaska. I knew the remoteness of the area was a factor, but I got to hear from my flight friends just how serious that issue is.

My presentation for this conference is on individuals with Access and Functional Needs (AFN), and I met Lisa, who works for the Governor’s Council on Disabilities and Special Education. They prepare kits to give to children on how to prepare for disasters. In addition, there were large font preparedness boards that can go on the fridge for everyone to see, in case of an emergency. I was so impressed with the work being done, that I invited her to speak with me!

These are the opportunities we have to learn from each other and ensure that we are doing all we can to be inclusive of the population in which we live.
