Adventures with Nurse Jamla

Ergophobia

Nurse Jamla

I came across this picture on social media and it made me think of how many people feel this way lately.

This post is not political in any way. In fact, some people may feel this way on a daily basis, without all the recent changes in administration.

As a nurse who has worked in a variety of challenging settings, one thing I know for sure is that I tend to stay in places and in situations longer than I should.

Perhaps it is because I believe that I am needed or if I leave, the patients won’t get the best care compared to what my peers were providing because they definitely didn’t care! I am not saying that all my coworkers were like this, but y’all know what I mean.

Point I am trying to make is, if we don’t take care of ourselves, especially our mental health, then how can we care for others?

If you have ergophobia try to pinpoint the reason why? Is the workload too much? Are the working conditions unrealistic? Do you lack the support of your management and peers?

Whatever the reason, do yourself a favor and don’t stay in places or situations longer than should. Change is hard, but what’s harder is trying to get back to a time when you were happy.

My call to action is for you all to seriously think about what makes you happy at work everyday and if you find that you have ergophobia, perhaps it is time for a change…
