Emergency Nurses Deserve More Than a Week of Recognition

Nurse Jamla

As Emergency Nurses Week comes to an end, I keep coming back to one question.

What happens after the celebrations are over?

The appreciation posts will slow down. The banners will come down. The recognition events will end, but the challenges facing emergency nurses will still be there.

Overcrowding. Workplace violence. Staffing shortages. Burnout. Limited resources. Barriers to professional development. And nurses who continue to feel unheard when decisions are made about their practice.

I’ve spent much of my career working across different areas of nursing, from the bedside to disaster response, education, research, and leadership.

Those experiences have reinforced something I strongly believe: Nurses need to be part of the decisions that shape their profession, not simply expected to implement them.

We also need to broaden our understanding of who belongs in emergency nursing conversations.

Emergency nurses work in rural and urban hospitals, ambulances, flight programs, military and uniformed services, humanitarian settings, and communities around the world.

Some are early in their careers. Others have decades of experience. Some have transitioned into education, research, policy, or leadership.

Every one of these perspectives has value.

If we want emergency nursing to move forward, we need to create meaningful opportunities for nurses to contribute, challenge outdated practices, and help shape the future.

Recognition is important. Gratitude matters.

But appreciation without action only goes so far.

I hope this week has encouraged conversations about what emergency nurses experience, what they need, and what we can do differently, and I hope those conversations don’t end today.

Emergency nurses deserve more than seven days of recognition. They deserve a profession willing to invest in them every day of the year.

Thank you to the emergency nurses who continue to teach, lead, question, learn, and serve.

Happy Emergency Nurses Week.
