Earthquakes and the Power of Practice

Earthquakes strike without warning, which means practice is our only defense. In schools, I’ve seen the value of a simple “drop, cover, and hold on” drill. What seems like a routine exercise can save lives when seconds count.

Preparedness for children isn’t just physical; it’s emotional. After drills, take time to explain why they matter, not to scare, but to empower. Kids who understand what’s happening are more likely to remain calm during chaos. As adults, we often underestimate how much they watch and learn from us.

Preparedness starts early. When we normalize safety conversations at home and in classrooms, we raise a generation that reacts with instinct, not panic.

Call to Action: Talk to the children in your life today. Ask if they’ve practiced an earthquake drill and review where they’d take cover. Preparedness begins with conversation.
