Day 8: Medication & Medical Supply Planning

Nurse Jamla

In disasters, pharmacies may close, supply chains break down, and hospitals become overwhelmed. For individuals with chronic illnesses, missing even a few doses can be life-threatening.

How to prepare:

  • Keep at least a 7-day supply of essential medications. If insurance limits refills, talk to your provider about “vacation” or emergency overrides.
  • Store meds in a waterproof container and rotate regularly to prevent expiration.
  • Keep a printed medication list with dosages, allergies, and prescribing physicians.
  • For medical devices (oxygen concentrators, CPAPs, insulin pumps), plan for battery backup or portable chargers.
  • Stock supplies like glucometers, test strips, inhalers, or wound care items.

As a nurse, I’ve seen shelters where patients arrive without insulin or asthma inhalers—putting them in critical danger. Medication preparedness saves lives.

Today’s Step: Create a written list of all your medications and dosages. Place a copy in your emergency kit.
