Adventures with Nurse Jamla

Day 12: Children’s Health & Safety

Nurse Jamla

Children are uniquely vulnerable in disasters. They depend on adults for protection, communication, and emotional reassurance.

Preparedness for kids includes:

  • Emergency contacts in their backpack.
  • Comfort items like a stuffed animal or blanket in their go-bag.
  • Age-appropriate explanations about disasters to reduce fear.
  • Practice drills-kids should know where to go during a fire or tornado.
  • Pediatric-specific medications, formula, and diapers.

After disasters, nurses often see children develop nightmares, regressions, or separation anxiety. Preparation helps buffer trauma.

Today’s Step: Pack a small comfort item (toy, blanket, or book) for each child in your household emergency kit.
