Trying to simulate a real-life scenario to include using all of your senses, can be very challenging. However, it is also very rewarding as those that have the opportunity to experience it, are often more prepared to respond to a real disaster.
Identifying challenges such as working with children, those that speak a non-native language, and managing accurate data collection, and integrating opportunities to learn in a disaster simulation, is one of the best opportunities I had when I was starting out in my career.
There was a county-wide, full- scale exercise and I learn how to properly use a radio and how to limit what I said. I learned ways to keep track of patient encounters so that the information can be compared to what the leadership tally was.
I learned so much that I appreciate the opportunity to share that information with others. It is only when we share information, that we truly grow as clinicians and make a difference in the lives of those we serve.
