As climate change intensifies the threat of landslides, the engineering community plays a critical role in forecasting, managing, and mitigating these dangerous events. This session brings together two experts to share crucial insights on cutting-edge research and frontline response.
Dr. Jean Hutchinson, a pioneering remote sensing researcher, will discuss how technological advancements are transforming the detection, monitoring, and analysis of mass-wasting events. She will highlight the most promising directions, practical constraints, and important considerations for disaster practitioners.
Dr. Alex Baumgard, will then share firsthand experiences responding to catastrophic debris flow and flooding incidents. Focusing on the evolving tactics, training, and data sources for those responding to landslide events, this talk underscores how emerging remote sensing technologies can enhance preparation and rescue efforts.
Join us to learn how engineers and disaster professionals can collaborate effectively to prevent future tragedies and strengthen long-term community resilience and recovery.
Additional presenter information:
Dr. Jean Hutchinson – Professor Emerita at Queen’s University and a fellow of both the Canadian Academy of Engineering and the Engineering Institute of Canada. Dr. Hutchinson specialises in rock engineering, site characterisation, and risk management for mining and transportation infrastructure, with a focus on landslide hazards.
Dr. Alex Baumgard – Principal Geotechnical Engineer at BGC Engineering Inc. Since 2006, Dr. Baumgard has been a member of Public Safety Canada’s Canada Task Force 1 (CAN-TF1) team partnered with the City of Vancouver and the Province of BC as an engineer during rescue and recovery operations in emergencies and disasters.
