I had the privilege of spending time with the incredible women of The Links, Incorporated – Southern Maryland (MD) Chapter discussing something that affects every community: disaster preparedness.

Preparedness isn’t just about having supplies. It’s about having the knowledge and confidence to act when seconds matter. During our session, we talked about practical steps individuals and families can take before disaster strikes, from creating emergency plans to understanding basic lifesaving interventions and building emergency kits.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting so many engaged community leaders who were eager to learn, ask questions, and bring this information back to their families, neighborhoods, and organizations. That’s how preparedness grows, one conversation, one household, and one community at a time.

I was also grateful to share copies of my book, Disaster Diaries, and meet readers who are passionate about strengthening resilience in their own communities. Hearing their stories and signing books is always a reminder that preparedness is deeply personal. Every family has a reason to be ready.

As emergency and disaster professionals, we often focus on large-scale response operations. But some of the most meaningful work happens long before an emergency ever occurs. It happens in community rooms, through education, partnerships, and empowering people with the tools they need to protect themselves and those around them.
