I previously served as an active-duty officer in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, where I held multiple senior leadership and advisory roles, including Executive Assistant to the Deputy Surgeon General and positions focused on national preparedness and deployment readiness. I deployed extensively as part of Tier One public health response teams, supporting domestic and international emergency operations, infectious disease responses, and humanitarian missions.

As a dual board-certified Emergency and Pediatric Emergency Nurse and a nationally registered paramedic, I bring deep operational experience from austere, resource-limited, and conflict-affected environments. My career has included service with NDMS DMAT NY-6, participation in National Special Security Events, and response to large-scale disasters and public health emergencies.

In addition to my operational work, I am an educator, editor, and scholar in disaster and emergency nursing. I serve as the Disaster Nursing Section Editor for the Journal of Emergency Nursing and as a Deputy Editor for Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness. I also serve on the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM) board, in an international governance role advancing global disaster medicine and health systems preparedness, contributing to multidisciplinary collaboration, policy dialogue, and education across international emergency and disaster response communities. I am faculty at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Harvard Medical School’s teaching hospital, where I completed the Disaster Medicine Executive Nursing and Administrative Leadership Fellowship.

My scholarly and professional interests include disaster preparedness, humanitarian health, pediatric trauma in conflict settings, responder mental health, workforce resilience, and health systems strengthening. I am deeply committed to mentoring nurses and public health professionals and to advancing culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and equity-centered approaches to care.

I am the founder of Adventures with Nurse Jamla and a Fellow of both the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) and the Academy of Emergency Nursing (FAEN). My leadership and service have been recognized with national honors, including the Surgeon General’s Humanitarian Service and Global Health Award and Nurse Responder of the Year.
