I spend a lot of time talking about disasters, preparedness, response, leadership, medicine, and what happens when our systems are pushed beyond their limits, ut some of the most important lessons I’ve learned in disasters have had very little to do with medicine.
They’ve been about people.
About compassion when resources are limited.
About showing up when someone is having the worst day of their life.
About the small moments that stay with you long after the deployment ends.
And about what disasters reveal about who we are when everything familiar is suddenly gone.
While I’m here at the conference talking about disaster preparedness and response, I wanted to share a different side of that work.
🎧 What Disasters Teach Us About Being Human
This conversation is about the stories behind the response, and some of the lessons the people I’ve met along the way have taught me.
Take a few minutes and listen. Whether you’re a nurse, PA, physician, responder, emergency manager, military professional, student, or simply someone who cares about helping others, I think there’s something in this conversation for you.
▶️ Listen to What Disasters Teach Us About Being Human
After listening, if something resonates with you, share it. The best lessons from disasters are the ones we don’t keep to ourselves. Because disasters don’t just test what we know. They remind us who we are.
