In a recent conversation with a colleague, I asked what their plan was if a cyber-attack happened at their hospital. Their response highlighted the lack of planning that we still have yet to do in regard to this disaster.

If all records are electronic and the attack left the hospital without any internet and phone lines were cut, what are some alternative means of communicating with other departments for critical results, radiology reports or admission report?

Sadly, as nurses, we aren’t always included in the planning phase, and there are things related to patient care that aren’t always considered.

Having “planned” downtime is an inconvenience, but only for an hour or two or for however long it is planned for. What if that “planned” downtime, ended up lasting for longer than anticipated?

The need for alternative means of communication is vital during a disaster. A nurse, I have a backup plan for my backup plan, however, that doesn’t mean I am prepared for everything.

More importantly, do our patients have a plan? Do they understand what a cyber-attack means for their health information?
