Traffic has more bumper to bumper lately. Sometimes I wonder if people forgot how to drive now that everyone is back to work. As much as I want to get home after a long day at work, I want to get home safely.
Today, I was almost hit MULTIPLE times by vehicles not paying attention, not using their turn signal, and motorcyclists zooming between vehicles.
When I was a flight nurse, I remember my first motorcycle accident patient. It was a 19-year-old male who thankfully, WAS wearing a helmet, but was under the influence of alcohol and went through an intersection and hit a van and the motorcycle flipped over.
It was a scary site, but thankfully, the trauma patient survived. I share this story because he did NOT have appropriate ID on him. In fact, he had the driver’s license of a friend which indicated that he was of legal age. Lesson learned for me, was to consider this in the future for trauma patients and when notifying family and I will share more information on this in another post.
The purpose of this post is to highlight the importance of advocating for helmet laws and engaging the youth in programs such as, Let’s Not Meet by Accident,” which “shows” them the implications of drinking while driving and being distracted.
I encourage you all to look at programs in your area and if it doesn’t exist, please reach out and I am happy to connect you with leaders that can help you come up with a program that you can implement.
