Today I had the opportunity to give a presentation on disaster planning for individuals with Access and Functional Needs (AFN). Unfortunately, I have personally seen how we don’t provide enough resources to these individuals to prepare for disasters, then, when disaster strikes, we scramble to understand how best to support them.
This is why we need more inclusive exercises. We need to include individuals with mobility issues and those that speak another language or those that need a sign language interpreter. Let’s not forget about the children and the animals!
It was a great opportunity for me to learn more about the incredible work being done in Alaska as it pertains to caring for individuals in remote villages and supporting them in times of disaster and public health emergencies.
I am thankful for friends who made the time to attend the conference and also share the beautiful parts of Alaska with me.
Until next time…
