As a nurse deeply rooted in emergency response and public health, few opportunities have been as rewarding and humbling as serving on the faculty of the Disaster Medicine Fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), a major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.

This renowned fellowship stands at the forefront of disaster preparedness, response, and recovery-training the next generation of leaders who will respond to crises when the world needs them most.

I’ve had the privilege of working alongside fellows from diverse backgrounds who share a common purpose: to serve, protect, and lead in the face of complex emergencies-from mass casualty incidents and pandemics to humanitarian crises and climate-driven disasters.

The curriculum is rigorous and hands-on, incorporating real-world deployments, multidisciplinary instruction, and direct mentorship from global experts. Being part of the faculty in this environment of excellence has been an incredible honor.

This past weekend, I traveled to Boston to attend the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2025. Standing alongside them, celebrating their achievements and reflecting on their growth, was a moment of immense pride. Their commitment, resilience, and intellectual curiosity have left an indelible mark on our program, and I know their contributions will shape the future of disaster medicine in powerful ways.

As I look ahead, I’m filled with excitement and anticipation for the incoming Class of 2026. Each new fellow brings fresh insight, energy, and passion to our collective mission. I can’t wait to welcome them into this extraordinary community of scholars, responders, and change-makers.

To be part of this journey-guiding, learning, and growing alongside such incredible professionals-is one of the greatest honors of my career. Here’s to continued progress, bold leadership, and a safer, more prepared world.
