When disaster strikes-whether it’s a hurricane, wildfire, pandemic, or armed conflict-the question is never if nurses will be there. It’s how prepared we’ll be.
As disaster nurses, we sit at the intersection of chaos and care. We triage without electricity, comfort families in rubble-strewn clinics, and make ethical decisions in morally complex environments. We are not just responders-we are planners, educators, advocates, and lifelines. And we are needed more than ever.
Climate change is accelerating the frequency and severity of natural disasters. Conflict is increasingly targeting health infrastructure and personnel. Public health systems are stretched thin, and still, many communities remain unprepared-not because they lack the will, but because they lack the tools and training.
That’s where we come in.
Preparedness isn’t a luxury-it’s a lifeline. But planning must be practical, inclusive, and culturally competent. It starts in our own households. It extends to our workplaces, our faith communities, and our professional networks. It demands that we as nurses bring our full expertise to the table-not just during the response, but before the sirens sound.
As I’ve learned from deployments around the world and the stories of nurses in Gaza, South America, and Europe-resilience doesn’t come from a stockpile. It comes from solidarity. From education. From showing up, even when we’re afraid, and from knowing that preparedness is not a checklist it’s a mindset.
Let’s move beyond go bags and into conversations. Let’s train our neighbors. Let’s advocate for policies that protect the most vulnerable. Let’s support one another-not just in emergencies, but every day.
