On Veterans Day, I always think about the parallels between military readiness and disaster response. Both rely on discipline, teamwork, and trust. Both require showing up when others are running away.
Many of the best disaster responders I’ve worked with have military backgrounds, they bring calm under pressure and a mission-first mindset that saves lives, but I’ve also learned that service leaves scars, both visible and hidden. As responders, we must extend the same care to those who’ve served as we do to the civilians we protect.
Veterans remind us that resilience is built through experience, reflection, and continued purpose. Service doesn’t end with the uniform, it evolves.
Call to Action: Thank a veteran not just with words, but with advocacy. Support mental health resources, employment opportunities, and programs that help veterans transition their service into community leadership.
