Winter doesn’t wait for you to be ready. One day it’s chilly; the next day, you’re standing in your kitchen realizing your power’s out, your phone is at 12%, and your kid just asked why the house is humming like a refrigerator that gave up.
As a disaster nurse who has deployed through blizzards, blackouts, and “this wasn’t supposed to be that bad” storms, here’s the truth: winter emergencies are predictable, yet most families remain unprepared.
This guide is your no-nonsense, real-talk checklist to get ready today, not when the snow starts falling sideways.
1. Build a winter-ready emergency kit
You need more than candles.
✔ Battery-powered lights
✔ Three-day supply of shelf-stable food
✔ Medications + copies of prescriptions
✔ Portable phone charger
✔ Manual can opener
✔ Extra blankets
✔ Pet food
✔ Infant/older-adult specific supplies
2. Expect power outages
If you rely on electricity for oxygen, CPAP, feeding pumps, or any essential medical equipment, you should have:
– Backup battery packs
– Notification with your utility company
– A pre-identified warming shelter
I’ve staffed shelters filled with people who never thought they’d need one. You don’t want to make the decision in crisis mode.
3. Prepare your home
✔ Insulate pipes
✔ Test smoke + CO detectors
✔ Clear gutters
✔ Label your main water shutoff (you’ll thank yourself later)
4. Plan for communication failures
Phones die. Cell towers go down. Have:
✔ A written contact list
✔ A family check-in plan
✔ A designated out-of-state contact
